A 69-year-old California Army veteran who owns an elaborately decorated “Trump House” remains in critical condition after a violent assault outside his home in Escondido.
Kerry Sheron was attacked around 2:15 p.m. Wednesday near the intersection of East Mission Avenue and Buchanan Street, directly in front of his residence. Officers responding to reports of an assault in progress found him severely injured and transported him to a trauma center, where he is being treated in the ICU.
A utility worker who witnessed the attack intervened and helped restrain the suspect until police arrived. Sheron’s wife, Maria Garcia, said doctors have given her husband minimal chance of survival.
The Attack and Arrest
Police arrested 32-year-old Thomas Caleb Butler shortly after the incident. He has been charged with attempted murder and is being held without bail at the Vista Detention Facility.
A bystander who helped during the assault also sustained injuries. According to a friend, Butler is a Navy veteran who has struggled with serious mental health challenges and had been taking medication for mental illness.
Possible Motivations Under Investigation
Sheron’s property has been a local landmark for years, covered with American flags, pro-Trump signage, and other patriotic decorations. Garcia suggested the visible displays may have fueled tension in the community.
“They don’t like the flags. I don’t know why. I support America. My husband is a veteran,” Garcia told CBS 8. She believes the assault may have been politically motivated.
Police have not officially confirmed a motive. California Republican Rep. Darrell Issa called for a full investigation and suggested the attack fits a pattern of violence against Trump supporters.
Community Impact
The home had previously faced vandalism and complaints due to its political messaging. Neighbors remembered Sheron as a friendly veteran who enjoyed waving to passersby.
The assault has shaken the San Diego area community. As Sheron fights for his life, his family is preparing for the worst while authorities continue examining the circumstances.
