Pratt Leads Raman For Final Run-Off Spot As Ballots Still Being Counted

With roughly 62% of votes counted in Los Angeles’ June 2 primary, Republican Spencer Pratt holds a commanding lead over Democrat Nithya Raman for the second runoff spot against incumbent Mayor Karen Bass.

Bass, the Democratic incumbent, fell short of the 51% threshold needed to win outright in the mayoral contest, triggering a November runoff. As of Thursday morning, Pratt had secured 157,116 votes (29.9%), while Raman, a City Council member, trailed with 119,809 votes (22.8%), according to The New York Times.

The former reality television personality’s strong showing marks a significant moment in Los Angeles politics. No Republican has won a mayoral race in the city in more than 30 years.

Why Voters Are Backing Pratt

Business leaders attribute Pratt’s surge to voter frustration with the city’s current direction. “I think a lot of people are concerned about what’s happening, they really don’t know how to fix this, and I think the crime, the homelessness, the addiction” are driving the shift, said John Putnam, president of Putnam Brands & Putnam Accessory Group.

Putnam said Pratt’s straightforward messaging is resonating across the electorate. “He’s pretty basic with his delivery of his issues, and I think that’s resonating a lot,” Putnam said. “Even if you don’t want to vote for him, you’re listening.”

Election Interference Allegations

Pratt filed a formal complaint Tuesday alleging Bass violated California election law by engaging in electioneering near a ballot drop box in Long Beach. State law prohibits candidates and campaign workers from campaigning within 100 feet of ballot locations.

“She is so accustomed to breaking the law with no accountability, she even filmed herself doing it,” Pratt wrote on X. “These clear violations show a reckless disregard for the rule of law and our democratic process.”

Bass’ campaign dismissed the complaint and questioned the credibility of Pratt’s accusations. The matter remains under review as vote counting continues across the city.
