Winner of California Governor’s Race Announced

Xavier Becerra secured a spot in California’s gubernatorial general election Friday after CNN’s Decision Desk projected he built an insurmountable lead in the state’s top-two primary system.

The result provides a significant victory for California Democrats, who faced concerns that a fractured field could allow two Republican candidates to advance under the state’s unique primary rules. Becerra’s advancement eliminates that scenario, though the race for the second general election position remains unsettled.

The Victory

Becerra posted a video to X following the projection, saying “I’m so humbled and honored to be moving on to the general election to become your next governor.” The former Biden administration cabinet secretary and California attorney general has steadily expanded his lead since Election Day.

California’s Democratic registration advantage exceeds 4.6 million voters compared to Republicans, according to state records. Arnold Schwarzenegger remains the last Republican elected to the governor’s office, winning reelection roughly two decades ago.

The Campaign Path

Several high-profile Democrats declined to enter the race, including former Vice President Kamala Harris, leaving the field fragmented among numerous candidates. U.S. Representative Katie Porter initially emerged as an early frontrunner before her campaign collapsed following the release of controversial videos.

Later momentum shifted toward then-Representative Eric Swalwell after he entered in late 2025, but his campaign ended following reports of alleged sexual misconduct. Swalwell denied the accusations and subsequently withdrew from the race and resigned from Congress.

Becerra centered his campaign on government experience and crisis management, arguing California’s challenges demanded a proven leader. He emphasized his work addressing complex federal issues throughout his tenure as attorney general and cabinet secretary.

The Opposition and Criticism

Critics challenged Becerra’s handling of the migrant child crisis, the federal mpox response, and other policy matters. His campaign also faced complications after a former chief of staff pleaded guilty to fraud involving campaign funds.

Supporters countered that Becerra inherited difficult circumstances and worked diligently to manage them. Former Biden White House Chief of Staff Ron Klain previously told CNN that Becerra tackled inherited problems with dedication.

The General Election Picture

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has secured the other major Democratic spot on the November ballot. The race for the second general election position remains competitive, with reality television personality Spencer Pratt currently holding that position.

City Councilwoman Nithya Raman has gained ground as election officials continue counting additional ballots. Whoever ultimately faces Becerra in November will confront a state dominated by Democratic voters.
