Leavitt Sets Media Straight With Fact-Check On Joe Biden

Author:

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt has hit back at critics, insisting Donald Trump’s administration offers far greater media transparency than Joe Biden’s presidency ever did.

  • Leavitt defended changes to White House press pool access, claiming they expand rather than restrict coverage
  • She highlighted that Biden held just 164 press conferences and interviews compared to Trump’s 468 at the same point in their terms
  • The Press Secretary rejected accusations of controlling independent media, insisting all outlets now have equal access
  • Leavitt noted the administration continues to allow ‘fake news leftist outlets’ to attend briefings
  • She argued the changes reflect a ‘digital age’ approach and Trump’s successful nontraditional media strategy

Setting The Record Straight

Speaking at an event hosted by Axios co-founder Mike Allen, Leavitt pushed back against suggestions the Trump White House was restricting press freedom. ‘We view them as opening access to more outlets, more voices, more news, journalists and outlets,’ she declared.

The Press Secretary questioned why traditional outlets should monopolise the 13-person daily press pool. ‘There are thousands of outlets who have White House press credentials. Why should a single outlet have the privilege of being in that pool every single day?’ she asked.

Biden’s Media Avoidance Exposed

An Axios investigation from July revealed Biden had conducted significantly fewer press engagements than his recent predecessors. At comparable points in their presidencies, Biden managed just 164 appearances versus Trump’s 468.

‘George W. Bush had 248 and Ronald Reagan had 262,’ Leavitt noted, emphasising the stark contrast. The figures exposed Biden’s notorious reluctance to face the press during his four years in office.

Defending The New Approach

‘If we were trying to create positive press for the president, we wouldn’t allow some of these fake news leftist outlets in,’ Leavitt told Allen. ‘But we continue to do that. No one has been restricted.’

The Press Secretary emphasised ideology played no role. ‘It’s just about increasing the wide variety of outlets that have access,’ she explained, noting the administration recognised the modern media landscape requires different tactics than traditional approaches.
